Terms of Service
The agreement between you and us when you use DescriptorAPI. Written to be read, not skimmed past.
Last updated 18 October 2026
1. The agreement
DescriptorAPI is a product of ApisOS ("ApisOS", "we", "us"). These terms apply to the website at https://descriptorapi.com, the dashboard and the DescriptorAPI API (together, the "Service"). By creating an account, creating an API key or otherwise using the Service you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy.
If you use the Service on behalf of a company or other organisation, you confirm that you are allowed to accept these terms for it, and "you" means that organisation.
2. Your account
- You must give a valid email address and keep it up to date. You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live.
- You are responsible for everything done with your account and your API keys. Keep passwords and keys secret, do not put keys in public code or client-side apps, and revoke a key from the dashboard as soon as you think it has leaked.
- One free account per person or organisation. Creating extra accounts to get around quotas or limits is not allowed.
- Tell us at [email protected] if you notice any unauthorised use of your account.
3. Acceptable use
You may use the Service to enrich transaction descriptors for your own products and customers. You must not:
- send card numbers, cardholder names, account numbers or other personal data in the descriptor or any other field. The API only needs the descriptor text;
- use the Service for anything unlawful, including fraud, money laundering or getting around sanctions;
- try to get around rate limits, quotas or security, probe or overload the Service, or get into accounts or systems you are not allowed to use;
- scrape, bulk-download or systematically copy the merchant data, for example to build a competing dataset or service;
- resell or sublicense raw API access to third parties as a standalone service, unless we agree to it in writing;
- reverse engineer the Service, except where the law allows it despite this restriction.
4. Your data
You keep all rights in the descriptors and other data you send us ("Your Data"). You give us permission to process Your Data to run, secure and support the Service, as described in the Privacy Policy.
We also use descriptor text, without your account details attached, to improve recognition for everyone, for example by caching merchants we recognise and reviewing descriptors we could not recognise. We never sell Your Data and never use it to train third-party AI models.
You are responsible for having the right to send Your Data to us, and for complying with the laws and card network rules that apply to your business.
5. Results and merchant data
The merchant names, categories, locations, logos and other information the Service returns ("Results") are provided for you to use in your products. You may store Results with the transactions they belong to and show them to your users.
Results are automated: some come from our merchant database, some from AI, and each comes with a confidence score. They can be wrong or incomplete. Do not use them as the only basis for decisions with legal or similarly significant effects on a person, such as credit, fraud or account closure decisions, without your own checks. Merchant names, logos and trademarks belong to their owners.
6. Plans, quotas and payment
- Each plan has a monthly quota of billable enrichments and a per-key rate limit, shown on the pricing page. An enrichment is billable only when it returns a merchant. Quotas reset on the 1st of each month (UTC); unused enrichments do not carry over.
- When a quota is used up, enrichment requests are refused until the next month or until you upgrade. We may change free plan limits at any time.
- Paid plans are billed in advance through our payment provider, every month on the day you subscribed. Prices do not include taxes, which are added where required.
- An upgrade applies at once, and the difference in price for the rest of the current billing month is charged straight away. A move to a cheaper plan applies from your next renewal; until then you keep your current plan.
- We will give you at least 30 days' notice of a price increase for your plan. If you do not agree, you can cancel before it takes effect.
- You can cancel at any time; your plan stays active until the end of the period you have paid for. Fees already paid are not refunded, except where the law requires it.
7. Statement analyzer
- Only upload statements you are entitled to share, such as your own. You must not upload someone else's statement without their permission.
- Each account can analyze a limited number of statements each month (currently 10); only statements we could read count. Each merchant identified counts toward your plan's monthly quota as a billable enrichment. We may change these limits.
- Analyses are automated and for your information only. Statements can be read wrongly or incompletely, and merchants and categories can be wrong. They are not financial, tax or accounting advice. Check your bank's statement for the authoritative figures.
- How we handle statements, what we keep and for how long is set out in the Privacy Policy.
8. Availability and changes
We work to keep the Service fast and available, but unless we have agreed a service level with you in writing, it is provided without any uptime commitment and may sometimes be unavailable for maintenance or reasons outside our control.
We improve the Service all the time. Results for the same descriptor may change as recognition improves. We will not make breaking changes to a published API version (such as /v1) without reasonable advance notice by email or in the docs.
9. Third-party services
We rely on carefully chosen providers for hosting, content delivery, email, payments, AI processing and, if you allow it, analytics. They process data only to provide their service to us, as described in the Privacy Policy.
10. Suspension and termination
You can stop using the Service and ask us to close your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account, or revoke API keys, if you break these terms, if your use puts the Service or other customers at risk, or if the law requires it. Where it is reasonable we will warn you first and give you a chance to fix the problem.
When an account is closed, your access ends and we delete your data as described in the Privacy Policy. Sections 4 to 6 (for fees already owed) and 11 to 15 continue to apply.
11. Disclaimer
To the extent the law allows, the Service and Results are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
12. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, neither ApisOS nor its suppliers will be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of profits, revenue, data or goodwill, arising from the Service. Our total liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose and USD 100.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
13. Indemnity
You will defend and compensate ApisOS against claims by third parties arising from Your Data or from your use of the Service in breach of these terms or the law.
14. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the Service changes. The date at the top shows the latest version. For material changes we will give paid customers at least 30 days' notice by email. Continuing to use the Service after a change takes effect means you accept the new terms.
15. General
These terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any order or agreement we sign with you, are the whole agreement between us about the Service. If a part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a right is not a waiver of it. You may not transfer these terms without our consent; we may transfer them as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of the Service.
